A Journey of Growth and Recognition
As I described in my previous article (please read), my journey began as an HS Classifier, a role I dedicated myself to since 2017. Over time, my curiosity and determination led me to explore research and development in using artificial intelligence for HS classification tasks. After publishing an article on this transition and sharing it on LinkedIn, I was overwhelmed by the positive feedback I received.
Startup founders, CEOs, and industry leaders acknowledged my efforts, with some even expressing interest in the project. This recognition has been both humbling and motivating. Currently, I am engaged in ongoing discussions with a few founders, and the possibility of collaboration keeps me optimistic about the future.
However, I have also identified certain challenges that are slowing down progress. With due respect to all stakeholders, I would like to share these insights.
Challenges in Advancing My AI-Based HS Classification Project
1. High Budget/Cost of the Project
The estimated cost to make this project market-ready is around INR 50–75 crore. For many startups, such a high initial investment poses a significant challenge. In a world where funding must be justified by immediate returns, convincing investors to take this financial leap is not easy.
2. Lack of Existing Projects
One of the biggest hurdles I face is the lack of similar tools or projects globally. Without a benchmark or proven workflows, developing a prototype becomes more complex. While this also means the project has great potential for innovation, the uncertainty makes investors hesitant.
3. Limitations of Current AI Technology
AI systems rely heavily on open-source internet data, which is abundant for general applications. However, the niche HS classification theories and processes required for this project are absent in public datasets. As a result, training AI to handle this task with precision is far more challenging.
4. Reluctance to Invest in R&D
Startups often operate with a business-first mindset. For many founders, investing in research and development feels risky, as it does not guarantee immediate returns. This reluctance to commit resources to R&D is a significant obstacle in progressing the project.
5. Communication Gaps Between Developers and Trade Compliance Specialists
Developers and trade compliance specialists come from vastly different professional spheres. This difference often leads to misunderstandings about each other’s needs. I faced this challenge firsthand when communicating my ideas to a developer with over 16 years of experience. Despite his expertise, our differing professional languages created barriers that were difficult to overcome.
6. Financial Constraints
Building a project of this magnitude requires funding at every step, from prototyping to testing. Unfortunately, financial limitations have slowed my progress. Despite making personal efforts, the lack of access to crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter in India further complicates matters.
7. Communication and Marketing Skills
As someone who studied in Bengali-medium institutions and is not a native English speaker, I face challenges in effectively articulating my thoughts to CEOs and investors. Additionally, my stuttering during conversations adds another layer of difficulty. My limited experience in sales and marketing also makes it harder to convince stakeholders about the project’s potential.
Moving Forward: A Hopeful Outlook
Despite these challenges, I remain undeterred. My “never give up” attitude has been my greatest strength throughout this journey. I am continuing to work on this project with limited resources, believing that perseverance will eventually lead to success.
I am also actively working on improving my communication and marketing skills to better convey my ideas to potential investors and collaborators. I have faith that one day, the darkness will pass, and I will wake up to a brighter tomorrow.
